People often ask me if they need an aftermarket ignition module. The answer isn't as simple as yes or no. The factory ignition module is adequate, IF you plan NO performance mods. However, I think the factory module and mapping for the Sportsters is far from ideal, even on a bone stock bike. The mapping has far too much spark advance in my opinion.
Since almost everyone installs an aftermarket air cleaner setup, rejets their carb, or at least tweaks the fuel mixture...and most change the exhaust on their bikes...I submit that an aftermarket ignition is a good investment. If you are planning on installing higher compression pistons or doing a Big Bore kit...an aftermarket ignition is a must have.
So Rico...what are my options? There are several aftermarket ignitions available for the 04-06 Sportster. They range from simple plug and play units, to some very high tech auto mapping versions. In future posts, we'll take a look at some of the options available, and the capabilities and limitations of each.
